An intermediate-mass black hole lurking undetected in a dwarf galaxy revealed itself to astronomers when it gobbled up an unlucky star that strayed too close. The shredding of the star, known as a «tidal disruption event» or TDE, produced a flare of radiation that briefly outshone the combined stellar lightContinuar Leyendo
París, November 14, 2022.- Solar Orbiter has spotted a ‘tube’ of cooler atmospheric gases snaking its way through the Sun’s magnetic field. The observation provides an intriguing new addition to the zoo of features revealed by the ESA-led Solar Orbiter mission, especially since the snake was a precursor to aContinuar Leyendo
ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft recently conducted tests in which it relayed data gathered by NASA’s Perseverance rover back to Earth. The 19-year-old spacecraft has now relayed data for seven different Mars surface missions – a unique, new record! Parìs, November 10, 2022.- Landers and rovers on Mars gather data that helpContinuar Leyendo
Three different moments in a far-off supernova explosion were captured in a single snapshot by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The progenitor star exploded more than 11 billion years ago, when the Universe was less than a fifth of its current age of 13.8 billion years. París, November 09, 2022.-Continuar Leyendo
A new model that accounts for the interplay of forces acting on newborn planets can explain two puzzling observations that have cropped up repeatedly among the more than 3,800 planetary systems cataloged to date. Houston, November 07, 2022.- One puzzle known as the «radius valley» refers to the rarity ofContinuar Leyendo
A spooky spider web, magical dragons or wispy trails of ghosts? What do you see in this image of the Vela supernova remnant? This beautiful tapestry of colours shows the ghostly remains of a gigantic star, and was captured here in incredible detail with the VLT Survey Telescope, hosted atContinuar Leyendo
The agency’s lander felt the ground shake during the impact while cameras aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted the yawning new crater from space. Washington DC, October 30, 2022.- NASA’s InSight lander recorded a magnitude 4 marsquake last Dec. 24, but scientists learned only later the cause of that quake:Continuar Leyendo
A recently released set of topography maps provides new evidence for an ancient northern ocean on Mars. The maps offer the strongest case yet that the planet once experienced sea-level rise consistent with an extended warm and wet climate, not the harsh, frozen landscape that exists today.
